Food Chain and Food Web: 10 pts

Illustrate one food chain with at least 3 organisms found in your biome (use common names for the organisms, pics are optional).  Separately, illustrate a food web found in your biome that must contain at least five food chains consisting of a producer, a primary consumer, and a secondary consumer.  Consumers must be labeled as (at least one of each) an herbivore, carnivore, omnivore, or decomposer.  At least one predator-prey relationship must be shown and labeled.  Four abiotic factors also must be included and labeled.  Rationale – Briefly discuss the relationships found in your specific food chain and food web.  Tell where the energy in the food chain goes.  Include brief definitions of each new biology term used in parenthesis after the word.  For example:  “…fed upon by an herbivore (plant eater), such as…”  In your predator-prey discussion, predict how fluctuations in the numbers of each organism might affect the other.  State one possible case where an invasive species might be harmful to the native species and the environment of your biome.  Conclude by briefly identifying and describing factors that limit population growth (distinguish between density-dependent and density-independent factors).

Energy Pyramid: 8 pts

Draw an energy pyramid for a 3-step food chain (use common names for the organisms, pics are optional).  Rationale – Discuss and explain what an energy pyramid shows.  Address these questions:  If 100% of the energy is available at the first trophic level, what percentage of the total energy is available at the highest trophic level?  Why is energy lost?  Label the energy percentages in your illustration.
